Certificate Overview

In 2010, Richmond Area Multi-Services, Inc. and San Francisco State University jointly developed the Peer Specialist Mental Health Certificate Program. Funded by the Mental Health Services Act (MHSA), the primary goal of the Certificate program is to prepare consumers of community behavioral health services or family members with the basic skills and knowledge for entry-level peer specialist/counseling roles in this system as well as to provide people with experience and opportunities to further their career in the behavioral health field. The Peer Specialist Mental Health Certificate Program initially offered one 12-week classroom education and hands-on training course (now known as the Peer Specialist Mental Health Certificate Entry Course). The Peer Specialist Mental Health Certificate Program has successfully completed 12 Cohorts, and has 160 graduates of the course. The Program has recently expanded to include additional training opportunities for peer providers and others interested in learning about peer-based services within the community behavioral health system of San Francisco.

RAMS offers its 12-week Peer Specialist Mental Health Certificate Entry Course two times annually, with the Spring 2017 Cohort currently in session. RAMS is NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS for its 8-week Peer Specialist Mental Health Certificate Advanced Course which provides additional education, networking and workforce development opportunities to people who are currently providing (or possess previous training and education to provide) peer support services and/or advocacy in the community, and would like to obtain more knowledge and training in the field. This course is also offered twice annually, with a Summer and Winter Session schedule, and has successfully completed 3 cohorts for the Advanced Course, with over 30 graduates. Please click on the link to the "Advanced Course" to access the brochure and application forms. In addition to these courses, RAMS also coordinates the Leadership Academy, a free, three-hour monthly training series open to all Bay Area residents, designed to support and educate peers providers working in the behavioral health field.
